Facing one of its toughest opponents to date, the Lake Region State College mens basketball team showed the ability to close out a close, hard-fought contest Tuesday evening in Minnesota.

The Royals used top-notch defense and timely scoring to walk away with a 78-74 victory over the Concordia College JV.

One key to the Lake Region State College victory was the play of its upperclassmen. The team’s five sophomore players were each among the Royals’ top six leading scorers.

Diallo Powell led the way with 15 points while Kharie Kirkland had 14. Pat Thomas added 11 points while fellow sophomores Adante Jones, who had a game-high 12 rebounds, and Tyler Moore chipped in with eight points.

Freshman Tom Kubank hit double-digits with 10 points. AJ Nywesh had seven points while Caerino Gurley added three.

One statistic that jumps out is the game’s turnovers. The Royals held on to the ball very well giving up just seven turnovers. On defense, however, Lake Regio State College gave continued problems to the Cobbers who finished 19 turnovers.

With the win, the Royals improve to 8-0 on the season. The team looks to stay unbeaten this week as the Royals face Dakota County in St. Paul Saturday afternoon.
