Basketball enthusiasts know the imprortance of setting the tempo. On Sunday afternoon, Lake Region State College showed just that against the University of Jamestown JV in women’s basketball action.

“We talked about getting out to a quick tempo from that first play,” First-year head coach Danny Mertens told the Journal. “I knew it was going to be important to get that full-court defense going.”

From the onset, Lake Region State College controlled the action getting out to a 10-0 start thanks to buckets by Sara Schwanke, Kennedy Henningsgard and Meghan Jorgenson.

Steals by Taylor Henningsgard and Schwanke led to inside buckets by Becca Eberle to give the home team a 22-2 lead early.

The Royals kept it going from there taking a 57-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Lake Region State College continued to control the game in the final 20 minutes as well. Buckets by Morgan Titus and Megan Cantellano helped the Royals run away with a 93-56 win.

Schwanke had 20 points to lead all scorers. Kennedy Henningsgard finished with 16 points while Eberle had 12. Titus added 10 points off the bench.

“Very pleased with our efforts,” Mertens stated. “We have seen a lot of improvement from the first to second week. The freshmen are more comfortable and it is showing.”

On Saturday, the Royals beat the Lake Region Alumni 95-53. Eberle, Schwanke and Kennedy Henningsgard each had 16 points while Taylor Henningsgard had 12.

The alumni, coached by Marcee (Winnegge) Logie, included Becca Scherr, Jessica Henningsgard, Steph Mertens, Jenna Gillett, Sam Brekke, Robyn (Herman) Mertens, Kristen (Brekke) Johnson, Allison (Soper) Yoder, Melissa Brown, Cindy Brown and Amanda Klemetsrud
