After having a strong surge in the past two weeks, the Lake Region State College volleyball team is ready for tournament time. The Royals kick off the postseason Saturday at the Region XIII Sub-regional tournament in Ironwood, Mich.

The double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday. The champion will advance to regional play.

The squad will be one of four squads in the tournament. Also playing are teams from NDSCS, DCTC and Gogebic Community College. There is no question about it, the Royals are looking forward to it.

“We’re ready to go,” Bridgette Freschette, Lake Region State College volleyball coach told the Journal. “Let’s fix our kings and go play some volleyball. We’re excited.”

Lake Region State College has defeated both Gogebic Community College and DCTC in straight sets. The Wildcats of NDSCS have beaten the Royals twice. But as coach Freschette notes, it’s a brand new ballgame.

“This is the beginning of a new season,” she stated. “Throw everything else right out the window.”

Freschette points out that the Royals’ block will be key to the team’s success.

“When it’s on, our block is deadly,” she said. “I have a feeling it will be on this weekend.”

For now, the Royals are focused and excited.

“I told the players just to have fun and play,” Freschette pointed. “We know we can play well. I believe we can win.”

The Royals kick off Saturday at 1 p.m. against DCTC.
