Firebirds pumped up for finale

Looking at the schedules of the Devils Lake and West Fargo Sheyenne football teams, you would think that you were looking into a mirror. There are many similarities in the two teams’ resumes. They meet Friday (tonight) in West Fargo at 7 p.m.
Both squads boast a 2-6 record overall and a 1-5 mark in the EDC. The Firebirds and Mustangs have knocked off the same teams; Grand Forks Central and Bismarck Legacy. Throughout the season both teams have competed well against the powerhouse squads in the state, but have ultimately fell short.
The Mustangs come into the game putting up some pretty impressive numbers offensively at times. Josh Roehrich is one of the team’s top weapons at quarterback. He has thrown for 970 yards and seven touchdowns. He has also racked up 385 yards on the ground. Skyler Angeles has 645 yards and six touchdowns rushing while Cole Setter has added 566 yards and five touchdowns.
“The Mustangs run the veer/option so we will have to be assignment sharp and each player do their responsibility and not try to do someone else's job,” Jay Schneider, Devils Lake head football coach, stated. “The 3 backs who all carry the ball numerous times and have had solid success this season. Roehrich also has thrown the ball very well this year.”
The key for Devils Lake will be simple: win the battle at the line. Throughout the season, the Firebirds have shown the ability to have success both running and passing the football. The Firebirds will need to do both to walk away with a win in the team’s finale, Schneider pointed out.
“Defensively they are solid. We will need to run and pass the ball equally on offense to be successful and win in the trenches, win the turnover battle, and win the field position game and also tackle much better than we did against West Fargo last week," Schneider told the Journal.
