The Devils Lake volleyball team took no time to get going Tuesday evening at the Devils Lake Sports Center. In an EDC conference match-up against Grand Forks Central, the Firebirds cruised to wins in the first two sets.

In the third set, the Knights bounced back with a win. Devils Lake, however, left no doubt by running away with the fourth set In all, the home team won by scores of 25-14, 25-11, 24-26 and 25-14.

“Girls played well with a little bit of a hiccup in the third set,” Firebird head coach Liza Zimmerman told the Journal. “In the third our passing was weak. The girls cleaned it up for the fourth set and came out strong.”

It didn’t take long for the Firebirds to get going. An early ace by Alexa Gathman and a nice play at the net by Morgan Karlstad gave the home squad a commanding 16-7 advantage. From there, the team used efficient passing to get good opprtunities for its middle hitters.

Mikayla Wallace and Amber Gathman had two straight kills while Karlstad added a block to give the Firebirds more momentum. A nice defensive play by Jessica Hagen gave the team the 25-14 win.

The momentum continued into the second set as pressure at the net forced miscues by the Knights. Blocks by Wallace and Karlstad helped the team win 25-11.

Grand Forks Central recovered nicely in the third set using improved passing to its advantage. In the end, the away team won 26-24.

The Firebirds, however, didn’t back down. With solid defense and power at the net, Devils Lake won the fourth and final set by a score of 25-14.
