Firebirds, Knights battle to overtime tie

Tanner Hoffmeyer (9) and Beau Eriksson (17) react after watching Hoffmeyer’s shot get past Grand Forks Central goaltender Eric Melland during the second period of Tuesday’s game at Burdick Arena. It was Hoffmeyer’s second goal and tied the game at 3-3. Neither team scored the rest of the way and settled for a 3-3 tie.

Fifty-one minutes of hockey just doesn’t seem to do much for Devils Lake. An overtime session doesn’t do much more.

For the third game in a row Devils Lake let a golden opportunity to climb closer to the top in Eastern Dakota Conference standings with a win on the ice. For the third game in a row the Firebirds were forced to settle for a tie.

Tanner Hoffmeyer pushed the puck past Grand Forks Central goaltender Eric Melland with less than three minutes remaining in the second period to forge a 3-3 tie and that’s how things ended. Neither the Knights or the Firebirds were able to get the advantage again as the two teams skated to a tie on Tuesday at Burdick Arena.

“We didn’t do the things we needed to do in the defensive zone,” Devils Lake coach David Zimmerman said. “We need to do a better job of playing the body.”

Devils Lake remains in fourth place in the league standings. The Firebirds (4-2-3) have 11 points, while Central (4-1-2) and Red River (5-2-0) both have 12 points and sit in front of the Firebirds.

Devils Lake and Red River meet Jan. 29 in Devils Lake.

Central grabbed the early lead on Tuesday, but Devils Lake tied the score on a goal by Jimmy Goulding with 4:55 remaining in the opening period. Tanner Hoffmeyer gave Devils Lake a 2-1 lead at the first break when he scored with 10 seconds left in the period.
