Firebirds, Bruins skate to 2-2 tie

Two times Devils Lake got the upper hand against Fargo South. Twice the Bruins were able to tally the equalizer as the Firebirds and Bruins skated to a 2-2 tie on Saturday at Burdick Arena.

“It was not one of our super performances,” Devils Lake coach David Zimmerman said. “We had some good quality shots ... but (South’s) goaltender kept coming up with some big saves for them.”

John Traynor got the Firebirds on the board first with a goal just 5:45 into the second period after the two squads skated to a scoreless first period.

Karson Kuntz and Austin Janzen were credited with assists on the goal for Devils Lake.

But South tied matters just moments later when Josh Loken stole a puck near center ice and slipped it past Devils Lake’s Sawyer Diseth to tie the game at 14:30 of the second period.

Tanner Hoffmeyer gave the Firebirds the lead again with a goal just 28 seconds into the final period after taking a pass from Beau Eriksson and Keaton Thompson.

But, for the second time, South responded with a goal from Jarrett Etches midway through the third period. The two teams battled on even terms the rest of the way.

“We missed four breakaway opportunities,” Zimmerman said. “If we could have scored one just one of them ... things might have been different.

“But, give South credit,” Zimmerman added, “they skated with us the whole game.”

Devils Lake returns to action on Tuesday when the Firebirds take on Grand Forks Central in another key Eastern Dakota Conference battle at Burdick Arena.

“Anything can happen,” Zimmerman said of the clash with the Knights, who are one point ahead of the Firebirds in the league standings. “I think our guys will respond well. They know that they didn’t play their best against Fargo South and there is a lot at stake. (Tuesday) is a big, big game for us.”
