Defending region champion Harvey ends North Star winning streak

CANDO, North Dakota — North Star coach Lauren Ressler is an optimist. And she should be after watching her team’s winning streak come to an end at the hands of defending Region 4 champion Harvey in straight sets on Tuesday night.

“A loss is disappointing,” Ressler said after watching her Bearcats fall 14-25, 26-28, 16-25 to the Hornets, “but if we use it in the right way, as motivation, we can move on from here a better team.”

The Hornets proved to be all they were billed as one of the favorites in the region this season. Harvey won the first set in convincing fashion 25-14 to take control of the match.

“Harvey, just like we expected, brought some great competition,” said Ressler, whose team fell to 12-3 on the season. “We were frozen and caught on our heels at time. (Harvey) has some great hitters and though we were on the floor for the digs, we were a half second behind.”

That timing improved dramatically in the second set as the Bearcats pushed Harvey to the brink before falling 26-28 and seeing themselves one set away from defeat. Harvey had little trouble in closing the deal with a 25-16 triumph in the third set.

Michelle Holien paced North Star with eight kills on the night, while Kelsey Teubner added five kills of her own. Torrie McTaggart and Caitlin Holien added three and two kills, respectively, for the Bearcats.

Brittney Held recorded 15 digs in the match.

North Star will look to begin a new winning streak on Thursday when the Bearcats entertain Leeds in Cando.
