North Star suffers first loss of season

CANDO, North Dakota — For the first four games of the season North Star put on impressive displays of offense and defense in running its record to 4-0.

That same defense found rough sledding on Friday as Towner-Granville-Upham scored a 58-48 win over the Bearcats at Conyers Field.

“We just didn’t tackle well,” North Star coach Bryan Haugen said.

The two teams combined for 14 points each in the first period before the visiting Titans began to pull away. T-G-U scored twice in the second period and scored a two-point conversion on each, while it’s own defense stopped North Star on each of its second-quarter scores to take a narrow 30-26 halftime lead.

The Titans, who should move into the state rankings this week following the win over the No. 3-ranked Bearcats, outscored North Star 28-22 over the final two periods to secure the win.

Colton Braun and Matt Swanson were held to just 132 combined yards on the ground for North Star. Braun led the way with 73 yards on 14 carries, while Swanson was limited to 59 yards on 10 carries after rushing for more than 100 yards in last week’s win over Lakota-Adams-Edmore.

North Star quarterback Jacob Hagler threw for 275 yards after completing 13 of 20 passes.

North Star travels to Fessenden on Friday to take on Wells County.
