Hagler passes North Star to 48-14 win over Benson County

LEEDS, N.D. —?The trouble with being successful in shutting down a quality opponent in one phase for the game oftens means another area will rise up and provide the impetus for continued success.

North Star proved that adage Friday as Benson County did all but eliminate the Bearcats ground game. That meant the air was filled with footballs as Jacob Hagler completed 13 of 18 passes for 219 yards and six touchdowns as North Star improved to 3-0 on the year with a 48-14 win over the Wildcats. Hagler completed scoring passes to five different receivers.

“(Benson County) did a good job of shutting down our running game,” North Star coach Bryan Haugen said.

Such a good job, in fact, that North Star’s Lance Logie and Colton Braun were held to a combined 109 yards on the night. Logie finished with 61 yards on six carries, while Braun rushed 14 times for just 48 yards.

That meant the Wildcats, who blitzed much of the game, according to Haugen, were suddenly susceptible to the pass. And Hagler took advantage.

He connected with Daniel Grande from seven yards out for the only score of the first period as the Bearcats established an 8-0 lead when Braun scampered in for the conversion.

The outcome was virtually sealed in the second period when North Star added two quick scores to build a 24-0 advantage.

After Hagler hit Josh Haugen from eight yards out for the score and Matt Swanson added the conversion run, the Bearcats caught BC off guard with an onside kick.

The Bearcats recovered and on the very next play Hagler found Swanson for a 46-yard scoring strike. Braun added the PAT run and North Star was in front 24-0.

“The onside kick and being able to score right away off of it was really a dagger,” said Haugen, who praised his offensive line for much of Friday’s success of his team.

“(I was really happy with our offensive line,” Haugen said. “Benson County) blitzed on almost every play and we did a great job of picking it up.”

North Star will face Lakota-Adams-Edmore in a key battle Friday in Cando, while Benson County travels to Towner-Granville-Upham.
