Lakota-Adams-Edmore improves to 2-0 with shutout of Benson County

LAKOTA, N.D. — The age-old adage that goes something like “if at first you don’t succeed ...” never looked to be as true as in Lakota on Saturday.

After seeing its first drive of the game stopped at near the goal line after a fumble, Lakota-Adams-Edmore made sure history would not repeat itself the next time down the field.

Quarterback Eric Haugland hit tight end Pat Hanson on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Tate Aronson scampered in from 12 yards out in each of the Raiders’ next two posessions to set the tone and L-A-E went on to defeat Benson County 30-0.

L-A-E improved to 2-0 on the season heading into Friday’s Region 3 opener when the Raiders entertain  New Rockford-Sheyenne.

Aronson scored two more touchdowns in the second half on runs of one and 15 yards, while the L-A-E defense did its job in the second half and held the Wildcats to just 32 yards on the ground over the final two periods.

Benson County (0-1) rushed for 56 yards in the first two periods, but was unable to get its ground game going after intermission.

Aronson finished the night with 206 yards on 29 carries and Rick Hamel caught three passes for 35 yards through the air.

Pat Hanson led the Raiders with 10 tackles on the night, Jaron Mohr added seven tackles and an interception.

Benson County was paced by Matt Knudson on defense.

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. —  Chris Cook tossed a pair of scoring passes in the second quarter as Four Winds won its season opener for a second straight season with a 26-6 win over Dunseith Friday in Fort Totten.

Cook tossed a 48-yard scoring strike  to Joey Greene and then added a five-yard toss to Chuck Lovejoy to give the Indians (1-0) a 14-0 halftime edge.

Cook and Green hooked up again in the third quarter from 29 yards out and Lovejoy rumbled in from four yards out in the final qiarter to close the scoring.

Cook finished with 249 yards through the air on just four of 12 passing. Ivan Twhohearts rushed 15 times for 102 yard, while Leonard Richotte added 75 yards on eight carries.

Four Winds entertains Drayton-St. Thomas-Valley Edinburg on Friday.

NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. — Andrew Schaefer booted a 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift New Rockford-Sheyenne to a 21-19 season opening win over Wells County on Friday in New Rockford.

Caleb Edmonson rushed for 192 yards on 22 carries to pace the Rockets. Edmonson played just three quarters after missing the opening period of play. He scored on an 82-yard scamper in the third quarter for NR-S.

Caleb Schuster scored the first points of the game for the victors on a 60-yard run and Stephen Guler added a one-yard run in the second period.
