What started out as a warm morning Monday in the Lake Region turned south in a hurry.

The rapid change in weather conditions wreaked havoc on scores as nine teams to the links as part of the annual Devils Lake Invitational.

Powerful Fargo Shanley was able to overcome the conditions as the Deacons came away with the team title after shooting a 330 on the day. They won by 11 strokes over Fargo Davies, which was competing in just its second-ever tournament.

The Eagles finished with a 341, while Grand Forks Red River and cross-town rival Grand Forks Central both carded a total of 385 to finish third and fourth, respectively. The Roughriders were awarded the third-place finish based on its No. six golfer on the day. Fargo North rounded out the top five with a 389.

Devils Lake finished ninth in the team standings with a 434 and finished nine shots ahead of Valley City, which ended the day with a 443.

Shanley had three girls finish in the top four on its way to the championship.

Sarah Storandt led the way with a 70 on the day to earn medalist honors. She won by eight strokes over Davies’ Allyson Meyer, who shot a 78 on the day.

Sophie Kenney (82) and Liz Strom (85) also shot well for the Deacons.

“I was happy with the girls,” Devils Lake coach Dave Kerlin said. “We need to improve in our putting and chipping game ... but there is always room for improvement.”

Bethany Hanson finished as the top golfer for the Firebirds for the second straight outing after leading the way in last week’s East-West Classic in Jamestown.

“The girls know when they are not making the shots they know they are capable of making,” Kerlin added.

“We had several girls cut some strokes off their score from last week ... I hope that gets them motivated to continue to work hard to improve.”

Devils Lake returns to action Thursday when the Firebirds take part in the Wahpeton Invitational.
