DLHS golfers 15th at Jamestown Invitational

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The 2010 high school sports season is officially underway.

The Jamestown Invitational girls golf tournament officially kicked off the season Monday and Devils Lake High School finds itself in 15th place after the first day of the meet at the Jamestown Country Club.

The Firebirds combined to shoot a 458 on the first day and lead Valley City, Bismarck and Belcourt heading into the final day of the tournament.

Minot leads Eastern Dakota Conference power Fargo Shanley by two strokes for the team lead. The Majettes carded a 330, while the Deacons are two strokes back at 332.

Century (349), Fargo Davies (353) and Dickinson (355)?round out the top five schools in the tournament.

“It was a rough day for us,” Devils Lake coach Dave Kerlin said.

Bethany Hanson and Cassie Dahlen were the top two Firebirds during the first day of the tournament.

Hanson carded a 108 to pace Devils Lake, while Dahlen finished just behind with a 113 on the day for the Firebirds.

Two-time defending state medalist Laura Kraft is the leader after the first day. The Jamestown High School senior shot a 70.

Jennifer Brandt got off to a rough start in the season opener and finished the day with a 116 after several of her shots missed the mark in windy conditions that began the day before subsiding.

“It was a tough start to the day,” Kerlin said.

Katie Brandt (128), Mallory Vose (131) and Ashley Otto (137) were the other Firebirds to take part in Monday’s portion of the tournament, which concludes Tuesday.
