Big second period lifts Bruins over Firebirds
After battling powerful Fargo South to a scoreless tie after the first 18 minutes, the next seven minutes were hellish for Devils Lake.
The Bruins got goals from three different players in a span of just over seven minutes and made them hold up as South logged a 3-0 win over the Firebirds on Tuesday at Burdick Arena.
“I thought we came out flat in the second (period),” said Devils Lake coach Dave Zimmerman. “We seemed to play the puck instead of the body, and we simply cannot do that.”
Tyler Sorenson got the Bruins on the board at the 1:30 mark of the second frame. Teammate Josh Hooey was credited with the assist.
Devils Lake had a chance to earn the equalizer a short time later, but Tate Aronson’s one-on-one shot was turned away by Bruin netminder Scott Buchholz.
A penalty was called on the play when South’s Alex Olson was whistled for slashing Aronson, giving Devils Lake a chance at a power play. Instead, Buchholz and the Bruins were able to withstand the Devils Lake man-advantage and keep the Firebirds off the scoreboard.
It was not that Devils Lake lacked the chances at finding the net. The Firebirds managed 21 shots at Buchholz, but were unable to dent the talented senior.
Devils Lake goalie Josh Janzen stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced on the night from the Bruins.
“I am proud of our effort against a great Fargo South team,” said Zimmerman, who remained upbeat despite the loss.
“I think this is all going to pay off at tournament time,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve battled some very good teams ... and I don’t think any of them are going to want to see us for a third time. It’s tough to beat a team three times.”
