Firebirds get back on winning track

DEVILS LAKE — Devils Lake’s quarterback tandem both tossed scoring passes in the third quarter to help the Firebirds break away from a stubborn Turtle Mountain squad as Devils Lake posted a 30-8 win over the Braves on Friday at Roller Field.

The win lifts Devils Lake to 5-1 on the season, while Turtle Mountain falls to 0-5 on the year.

Beau Erikkson hooked up with Brandon Myhre from 21 yards out early in the second half give the Firebirds some breathing room after allowing a late second-quarter touchdown run by Tyler Vivier that allowed Turtle Mountain to close to within 16-8 at halftime.

Myhre’s score increased Devils Lake’s lead to 22-8 and Ben Wolf ran for the conversion to make it 24-8.

Later in the period, Cole Boehmer connected with Tyler Mertens for a 62-yard scoring toss to close the scoring.

It was the second touchdown of the night for Mertens, who had a 37-yard reception in the second quarter to put the Firebirds on the board. Mertens finished with two catches for 99 yards on the night.

The Firebirds held Turtle Mountain to just 189 yards of offense, with 110 of those yards coming on the ground.

Devils Lake, meanwhile, racked up 406 yards on the night and senior Ben Wolf continued his torrid pace by rushing for 238 yards on 27 carries in the contest.

Devils Lake plays at Bismarck St. Mary’s on Friday.
