Valley City seeing lots of hill slides

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — The hills in Valley City are slipping, sliding and slumping.

Building and fire inspector Dave Andersen says he can't recall ever seeing hills in as bad a shape as they are this year. The falling hills are twisting telephone poles and threatening to cover roads. John Bury tells the Valley City Times-Record that he's lost half his front yard near Baldhill Dam.

Engineer Erik Gilbertson says a wet winter followed by a wet spring is to blame. He says the hills are shale or blue clay that slips on the layer below it when it gets wet. He says it's unique to the Sheyenne River Valley.

Gilbertson says his advice is, "don't build on hills."
