Lake Region State College’s TRiO-Student Support Services Department has added a new educational personal finance program for college students to its curriculum to teach money management skills.

College students enrolled in the TRiO program at LRSC now take Financial Literacy 101.

TRIO-Student Support Services is a federal grant-funded program that serves first generation, low income and disabled students. Lake Region State College is the only community college within the North Dakota University System that offers a TRiO SSS program.

The TRiO program is designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students, to increase the transfer rate of eligible students from two-year to four-year institutions, and foster their success, said Theresa Leiphon, LRSC TRiO director. Services provided include tutoring, advising, and career counseling along with many other useful services such as the Financial Literacy class.

“The Financial Literacy 101 course is extremely helpful in providing a first-hand look for students of their current income in relation to their debt ratio,” Leiphon said.

TRIO students who completed the NEW Financial Literacy 101 training program were entered into a drawing for an Apple iPad 1 and accessories kit.

“We hope to help students get an accurate portrayal of their finances and how to budget responsibly for their future.” says Heidi Becker, administrative assistant in the TRIO Department.

The TRIO program serves 160 students a year. For more information on the TRIO program call (701) 662-1529 or visit
