Kayla Haugen, a senior at North Star High School in Cando, was named the state winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman (WHSH) Award.

The WHSH program has set the standard for high school student athletes, and gained tremendous prestige as the program combines the best of high school athletic and academic awards.

Each fall, the WHSH recognizes the nation's most esteemed high school senior men and women for excellence in academics, athletics and community and school leadership.

Each year a school can nominate one male and one female student athlete. Kayla was chosen to represent her school and went on to compete against 1,020 other state finalists.  Kayla was chosen as one of 102 state winners to represent North Dakota on the national level.

Kayla is the daughter of Marjean and Kent Haugen and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Dick and the late Mr. and Mrs. Don Haugen.
