In the two years since Devils Lake made the move down to AA football they have established a reputation for being a defensive minded team. In those two years, there have been three linebackers named to the all-state team, and junior Sam Desai looks like he is capable of making that list a little bigger.

“Those guys helped me a lot. They would tell me what I did wrong and helped guide me out there on the field,” said Desai when asked what it was like to play with that many quality players.

Desai, who played outside linebacker last year, is moving to the inside to help shore up a linebacking corps that is lacking the depth it has had in the past.

“I prefer the outside more, I’m kinda small for the middle but I’ll do what I can. It will be tough to replace guys like Mike Wahl and Jared Schmidt.”

Even though he is looked at to lead the defense, Desai says he likes the offensive side of the ball a little better.

“I get to block and hit people every play. You just get to hit people at full speed instead of getting hit.”

Even with the expectations from the coaches to be a standout on both sides of the ball, Desai makes it known that he isn’t worried about just himself.

“I’m more focused on the team than individual accomplishments. We just want to win every game. I am more focused on that.”
