Belcourt man sentenced for three counts of assault with weapon

Kevin J. Lafontaine, 35, of Belcourt, N.D., was sentenced June 13 by United States District Court Judge Daniel L. Hovland on three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Lafontaine pleaded guilty to the charges on March 21, 2011.

Judge Hovland sentenced Lafontaine to two years in federal prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release. Lafontaine was ordered to pay a $300 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund.

On October 1, 2010, Lafontaine was traveling in a vehicle southbound on BIA Road #7, north of Belcourt.

Lafontaine came upon another vehicle and recognized the vehicle’s occupants. Lafontaine, using his vehicle as a dangerous weapon, rammed the other vehicle causing the other vehicle to leave the highway and roll over. The three occupants of the other vehicle were injured, but the injuries were not life-threatening.
