BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck woman has pleaded guilty to exploiting an elderly man with dementia and been sentenced to probation and restitution.

Authorities accused 50-year-old Becky Vandal of coercing 85-year-old Gerd Ebel into giving her more than $110,000 about a month before he died.

Defense attorney Irv Nodland says Vandal and Ebel were to be married. Vandal told Judge Bruce Haskell she did not ask for the money and was surprised when Ebel gave it to her.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Haskell expressed doubts about the claim but approved a plea agreement between Vandal and prosecutors. He ordered Vandal to spend three years on probation, complete 80 hours of community service and repay the money.
