In the summer of 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, they are endowed with certain unalienable rights...among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...”
Each person is born with certain capacities for creating, working, learning...but these aren’t necessarily the same for every one of us. If we were all made from the same mold, our Creator could have just made one master cookie cutter and stamped each of us out. Let’s face it...this world couldn’t exist without people doing all honest employment whether they are a doctor, a scientific genius, or a scrub woman.
In plain and simple words what the above excerpt from Jefferson’s declaration actually means is that each of us is born with a certain free will to do our own thing SO LONG AS it doesn’t impinge on others rights...and therein lies the problem. Some others rights are both destructive and improper. Even the words of the original Creator can be bent to include wrongful acts.
The chaos that has visited us during the last year (all over the globe) does not do us proud. Where has our pride gone? Where has our ability to accept others rights disappeared to? Where has MLK’s example in dealing peacefully with our differences hid its head?
ALL life matters! Peace carved out of concern for others MUST become a common practice or this world is doomed. IT IS UP TO EACH OF US...to take the plot of ground we are privileged enough to stand on...and to declare, “We will overcome...peacefully”.
I for one will make this promise...one so powerful that it should be carved on every door post that exists...every entry way to all buildings wherever they are.
I don’t make this promise lightly! Our children’s and our grandchildren’s future depends on each adult to act in a way that this truth will be self-evident...that each person who will ever exist...is created equal.
Let us stop being destructive...and begin building a life that will make this planet HEAVEN ON EARTH. We can do it! All it will take is for each of us to actually forget our differences and live as though each person is as close to us as though they were our child, our parent, our loving spouse...
We must remember that all words are hollow unless we each make a commitment to follow the master plan of peace to its completion.
Our very future really does depend on this as we make peace a way of life...or eventually there will be NO LIFE on this earth...we will destroy what was created to be our home.
WAR whether it is on home turf or in another country must cease to be common practice...we in America can start this old ball (earth) rolling in the right direction. Only then can we become the leader we were once thought to be. LET US RECLAIM that wonderful legacy...left to us by such people as Thomas Jefferson and MLK.
It must no longer be “God save the queen”...if we play our cards right...we can be the example of...”we each, with some help from God...can save us all.” It is up to each of us...to wear this badge of honor.
