Eight colorfully decorated paper bags will soon be turned into luminarias for the Lake Region Relay For Life. Each bag will be opened, filled with sand and a candle will be placed inside.

The Lake Region Relay For Life is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Alvina Ebensteiner and Jan Kurtz are co-chairs for this year’s Relay. Alvina and husband, Allan, who is a committee chairman, have been involved for years. Their daughter Ashley and son-in-law Andrew are volunteers.

The Ebensteiners lost a daughter, Amanda, to cancer when she was still in high school.

Kurtz has been involved with the Lake Region Relay For Life since it first began. She is a breast cancer survivor whose family members are all volunteers for the event, as well.

This year’s theme is “Ignite your passion!”

The Survivor’s Social will be held starting at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m.

This year there will be a number of speakers sharing their stories including the Kletts, Hudson’s family, Catherine Barta, Kathy Lovseth and Mrs. North Dakota International Ashley Rae (Severinson) Klinger.

This year to celebrate the Relay’s 20th year they are planning some special door prizes. According to Co-chair Ebensteiner every hour a drawing will take place and $20 cash will be given out to someone who is walking.

More prizes will be given out at the 6 a.m. Saturday morning closing ceremonies including a TV, a hand-made lap quilt and several gift certificates.

Throughout the evening as the Relay goes on there will be entertainment provided by various Relay teams, Karaoke, games on the track and, yes, paint ball!

Ebesteniner says, “Don’t forget the silent auction which includes some fabulous baskets and purses, or the Relay Store for all your Relay For Life T-shirts and sweatshirts.”

Food will be provided and served by the Knights of Columbus, who in the past have turned right around and donated their profits to Relay For Life.
