Spirit Lake holding substance abuse summit

The Spirit Lake Nation issued a “State of Emergency” declaration on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 in response to the wide-spread, mounting problem of illegal drug use, abuse and trafficking on the reservation.

Starting at 9 a.m. today, Feb. 25 they are hosting a Substance Abuse Summit at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort bringing together tribal leaders with members of the North American Inter-Tribal Drug Task Force, BCI and many other tribal, state and federal entities.

The two-day, invitation-only, event will address the needs of the Spirit Lake Nation and strategies to meet those needs.

Presenters at this summit include James A. Iron Shell from the North American Inter-Tribal Drug Task Force, S.A. Amanda DeMontigny from the BIA Drug Task Force, Travis Zahn from Devils Lake Region Narcotics Task Force of BCI, Allyson Bartlett director of Sacred Beginnings, Chuck Sanderson, Director of Spirit Lake Tribal Social Services and many others. Participants will be welcomed by Myra Pearson, Chairwoman of the Spirit Lake Tribe in her opening address at 9:15 a.m.
