Journal Staff Report

The fourth annual “Capturing the Moments” 5K walk/run is coming on Saturday, Aug. 24 starting at 10 a.m. from Ruger Park in Devils Lake.

Anyone wishing to participate should pre-register by picking up a form at Heartland Care Center, Mercy Fitness or Anytime Fitness or or the HCC Foundation, 620 14th Ave. NE, Devils Lake, ND 58301.

A participant waiver is provided for all participants to sign certifying that the runner or walker is physically qualified and sufficiently trained to participate in the event. Participants under 18 years of age need a parent or guardian’s signature.

This annual event is a fundraiser intended to raise awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s. A $20 registration fee is charged per person. The money raised goes to programming to help families understand what happens as the disease progresses and how best to care for their loved ones.

According to Karissa Olson who is CEO of Heartland Care Center, this year the funds will go to bring in speaker Jolene Brackey from Western Montana. She is an expert on dementia. She will work one on one with staff and caregivers who work directly with those suffering from Alzheimer’s. There will also be public sessions for families and friends of those who live with the disease.
