Devils Lake resident robbed by computer scam this week

The Devils Lake Police report that a local resident fell victim to a computer scam this week.

Police state that a window popped up on the victim’s screen claiming to be the Homeland Security Department saying the computer was frozen and $300 needed to be paid via a Green Dot Money Card to fix the computer.

Police say scammers commonly use pre-paid cards like the Green Dot because one the scammers get the account number on the card they can quickly remove the money off the card and the scam victim is out the money.

Police remind residents that the Homeland Security Department, the IRS or the FBI or any other government agency are not in the business of selling computer virus protection or removing viruses from computers.
