Quick start helps Hi-liners hold off Firebirds

The Valley City Hi-liners used an impressive 32-point run in the first half on Tuesday to build a huge then and then held on to claim a 64-58 win over the Devils Lake Firebirds in boys’ basketball action.

Valley City, which had four players reach double figures in the contest, enjoyed a solid first-half effort against the Firebirds. The Hi-Liners pounded out a 32-23 spree in the initial 16 minutes of play.

Devils Lake came roaring back in the second half, however. The Firebirds knocked down shot after shot in the contest and outscored Valley City by a 35-32 clip.

Nathan Mertens and Chase Johnson both hit double digits for the Firebirds. Mertens led all scorers with a game-high 26, while Johnson added 12.

Spencer Halvorson also played well for DLHS. He tallied eight in the game. Teammates Briar LeBeau and Hunter Cinchos pushed in six apiece.

Kared Lentz led VC with 20.

With the loss, Devisl Lake fell to 5-10 for the season, and slipped to 4-9 in EDC play.

Devils Lake will host Fargo South on Feb. 19 in the Devils Lake High School Sports Center.
