Obit: Paul Emerson Wood Jr.
Paul Emerson Wood Jr., “Big E”, 70, of Coleharbor, N.D., died on Friday, February 8, at his home after a battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Crary Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Emerson was born on June 17, 1942 in Devils Lake, N.D. to Paul Emerson Sr. and Averiel (Fleming) Wood. He was raised and educated in rural Warwick, N.D. and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1960. He married Sharren Quandt on October 27, 1962 and they had five children, Bradley, Brian, Timothy, Laurie and Lisa. They later divorced.
On September 30, 1977, Emerson married Lynette Hill in Devils Lake. They had two children, Brandon and Lonnie. Together they farmed at Warwick and Karlsruhe, N.D. Emerson also worked construction for Hulstrand Construction and Neshem Peterson Construction. They also lived in Turtle Lake and Garrison before moving to their farm in rural Coleharbor, when Emerson went to work for North American Coal at the Falkirk Mine. He retired from the mine in 2003 after 23 years.
Emerson was truly a cowboy at heart. He may even have been born one hundred years too late. He was a member of the Brushpoppers Horse Club for 28 years and was the founder of the Brushpoppers Special Ride. He was also a member of the Fort Totten Trail Riders for 18 years. He was a member of the Malcolm Township Board for 15 years, assistant leader for the Flickertails 4-H for four years, and was on the Devils Lake Rural Fire Dept. for 12 years. They were also members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Turtle Lake.
Emerson is survived by his wife Lynette, Coleharbor; sons, Bradley (Michelle) Bismarck, N.D., Brian (Margaret), Lincoln, N.D., Timothy (Beth) Bismarck, Brandon, Coleharbor; daughters, Laurie (Rodney) Bischof, Lisbon, N.D., Lisa (Brian) Schmidt, Wadena, Minn., Lonnie (Dave) Rotenberger, Milnor, N.D.; 12 grandchildren, R. Jay, Levi (Samantha), and Courtney Bischof, Michael (Emily) and Megan (Jacob) Schmidt, Audrianna Deckert, Benjamin, and Joseph Wood, Jack and Bailey Wood, and Josie and Eli Rotenberger; mother, Averiel Wood, Warwick; brother, Bill (Valerie) Wood, Warwick; sisters, Janice Meyer, Jamestown, N.D., Lois (Larry) Wilhelmi, Devils Lake; sister-in-law, Sharon Wood, Maddock, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Emerson Paul Wood Sr., one brother, John Wood, and a brother-in-law, Al Meyer.
