Ruth Marion Sletten was born on September 23, 1920 at Northwood, N.D. to Henry and Hilda (Welo) Sletten of Larimore, N.D. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Honeyford, N.D. and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Churchs Ferry. At 14 months of age, Ruth moved with her parents to Churchs Ferry where she attended school and graduated from Churchs Ferry High School. She continued her education at Mayville State College for two years and Moorhead State College for two summers. She taught in North Dakota schools for six years.
Ruth was united in marriage to Clifford G. Myhre at Churchs Ferry on June 16, 1946. They established their home on a Churchs Ferry area farm, and in 1970 were proud to purchase and move to the family farm. They lived and worked side by side through the years, retiring in 1982. Clifford passed away on February 29, 1988. Their lives were blessed with two daughters, Twila Rae who died in infancy and Natalie Jean.
First and foremost, Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. She also thoroughly enjoyed her job as a local news correspondent for the Benson County Farmers Press, the Devils Lake World, and the Towner County Record Herald beginning in 1965 until she moved to Devils Lake in 1998. She also served as the Normania Township Treasurer for many years.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and WELCA, the Ferry Seniors Club, WildRose Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star since 1954, serving in many capacities, and is a past Worthy Matron. After moving to Devils Lake she was very active with the RSVP Program and she volunteered at the Devils Lake Senior Center.
Ruth knew the value of hand written correspondence. She enjoyed writing letters and receiving friendly mail in return. She never missed sending a card with a personal note for holidays, birthdays and special occasions. Ruth will be missed but always be in the hearts of those who loved her.
