Dr. Arne Graff and Carrie Simonson, RN, will be speaking at Lake Region State College Wednesday about child abuse. The event is free and open to the public.

A free public workshop will be held in Devils Lake on Thursday to deal with the problem of child abuse. It is free to attend and will be held at Lake Region State College from 9-11 a.m.

“It's for everybody and anybody,” said Virginia Eisenzimmer of Prevent Child Abuse North Dakota, noting that parents, teachers and those in the health care are all invited to attend.

She said the event is possible because of a grant from the  Bremer Foundation, which specified the money must be used for child abuse prevention.

“That's what our job is, we go out, do whatever we can to educate people on child abuse prevention,” she said. “Even one child is worth it.”

Featured speakers will be Dr. Arne Graff, medical director for the Child and Adolescent Maltreatment Center, and Carrie Simonson, RN, who coordinates the care at The Child and Adolescent Maltreatment Center.

Dr. Graff also served as the medical consultant for the Red River Children's Advocacy Center and Dakota Children's Advocacy Center. He is specially trained in child abuse pediatrics.

Simonson is specially trained in child abuse nursing and is certified as a pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner.

Eisenzimmer said both speakers have visited the Lake Region before.

“Everybody I have talked to is so happy to get them back,” Eisenzimmer said.

Pre-registration is not required to attend the event. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Eisenzimmer at (701) 739-7434.
