Meet dates expected on Fighting Sioux nickname

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota House's Republican majority leader says talks with the NCAA about the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname are still needed.

The NCAA says it won't change a policy that will penalize UND for continuing to use the nickname and an American Indian profile logo.

Fargo Rep. Al Carlson wants state officials to meet with the NCAA to discuss the issue, and Carlson says the talks could still be useful. He says the NCAA may listen to the opinions of elected officials.

New Board of Higher Education President Grant Shaft says UND and the board will help set up the meeting, but legislators and Gov. Jack Dalrymple should take a lead role.

The Legislature this year approved a bill requiring UND to keep using the nickname.
