BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota potato growers, dealers and processors held 1.7 million hundredweight of potatoes in storage on June 1, equal to last year but down 23 percent from 2009.

The USDA's Agriculture Statistics Service says that current stocks represent 8 percent of production, down 1 percent from last year and 2 percent from 2009.

Total stocks are defined as all potatoes on hand, including those that will be lost through future shrinkage and dumping.

Nationally, the USDA says that the 13 major potato states held 35.5 million hundredweight in stock on June 1, down 36 percent from a year ago.
