Minot residents decide sales tax question

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot residents go to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to extend a city sales tax that's dedicated to a water project.

The ordinance would redirect the 1 percent tax for the Northwest Area Water Supply project to property tax relief, infrastructure and community facilities, once the tax revenue no longer is needed to help pay for the Missouri River water project. The city finance office tells the Minot Daily News that could happen by the end of the year.

The Ward County Farmers Union and Farm Bureau oppose the ordinance, saying it would affect rural shoppers in Minot who have no vote.
