(AP) — The top spellers in the Dakotas didn't make it to the second day of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Elliott Stone of Bismarck, N.D., and Ryder Heitz of Newell, S.D., both spelled their words correctly in Wednesday's two oral rounds but did not score high enough on a written test to advance to Thursday's semifinals and finals.

The winner of the national bee gets more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
