Former city administrator wants position back

One of the items on tonight’s Devils Lake City Commission meeting will be the city administrator position.

Terry Johnston had resigned the position he held as city administrator/auditor to take a job as CEO of Flatlander Foods on Highway 20 south of Devils Lake.

At the Monday, Dec. 21 special meeting the commission voted to split the position into two separate positions.

The position of auditor was offered to assistant auditor Linda Lybeck who had served there for the past three years. Lybeck accepted the position and it became effective January 1, 2011.

Now, according to Devils Lake Mayor Dick Johnson, Johnston recently re-evaluated his decision to leave the city and has asked them to take him back, but not as city administrator/auditor, he is interested in returning to the administrator position.

If he is brought back, and that will depend upon tonight’s response at the City Commission, it would reportedly be as administrator. Johnson believes there is a need for an administrator.

“I think we really need Terry’s expertise,” the Mayor said. “We could have him involved in some of the dike work and maybe out of the office more.”

“We could make things more efficient in a lot of ways because the next few years are really going to be intense around here.”

Johnston declined comment until after tonight’s meeting. His situation will be brought up under new business tonight.
