Chancellor: Plans to drop UND nickname proceeding

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The chancellor of North Dakota's university system says the University of North Dakota is going ahead with plans to drop its Fighting Sioux nickname this summer.

William Goetz says three bills that have been introduced in the North Dakota House haven't slowed down the change.

Goetz is speaking with the Board of Higher Education late Thursday about the Fighting Sioux bills and other proposals affecting the university system.

Two of the bills would stop UND from dropping the Fighting Sioux nickname. The third would allow the name to be kept only if Standing Rock Sioux tribal members endorse it.

Goetz says the legislative process will have to play out. Goetz himself is a former Republican assistant majority floor leader in the North Dakota House and Senate.
