BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Congressman Rick Berg says he is horrified by the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.

Berg said in a statement Saturday the attack on Giffords and others was "senseless" and says his thoughts are with Giffords, her staff, those who were injured and their families.

Former North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy says he is "sickened" by the attack and says Giffords is regarded as one of the "nicest, most pleasant and best-liked members of Congress."

He said in a statement that it's unthinkable that public servants would be attacked while performing their duties. He says he is praying for her recovery and the others who were hurt.

Giffords was shot by a man who opened fire outside a grocery store. She is recovering after surgery.
