BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of permits issued for oil and gas wells in North Dakota was a record in 2010.

The Minot Daily News reports that 1,676 new drilling permits were issued in 2010. That's up from 623 in 2009.

Assistant Oil and Gas Division Director Bruce Hicks says North Dakota's record high was in 1981, when 1,098 permits were issued.

Hicks is expecting another record this year. He says up to 200 drill rigs are expected to be operating in the oil patch this year, which will require about 2,000 new drilling permits.
