The Lake Region District Health Unit will celebrate its 60th anniversary Sept. 20.

An open house will be held from 12-4 p.m. that day at the Memorial Building in Devils Lake.

Since 1950 the unit has been providing public health services in the Lake Region, and Ramsey County will team with Benson, Eddy and Pierce counties in the festivities.

Karen Halley is the administrator of the Lake Region District Health Unit here in Devils Lake.

“We provide a lot of services,” she says. “More than a lot of people might even realize.”

The public health nurses handle immunization efforts for nearly all ages.

Halley says they’re involved in the car safety program, and even sell some car seats that are obtained through the State Health Department.

“We then tell the parents how to use them,” adds Halley.

Public nurses also do home visits for those who are  unable to make it to the office and provide other health services for the community.

There’s an environmental health program that deals with sewer codes, inspections, probes complaints, disseminates public information, offers water test kits, and has an emergency preparedness program to deal with potential disasters.

There’s also a special program dealing with nutrition for youngsters, and a tobacco prevention program.

“We offer plenty of other things too,” adds Halley.

The planned event on Sept. 20 will include cake and refreshments, program booths and door prizes.

The unit invites all community members to the open house, and more information can be obtained at 662-7035.
