A 41-year old Devils Lake man is in custody in the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center charged with Aggravated Assault for an incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 7.

Duane Gunville, who works as a BIA Police Officer on the Spirit Lake Nation, was arrested in the Belcourt area later Saturday afternoon after fleeing from Devils Lake.

A brief stand-off with Turtle Mountain authorities led to his arrest.

Authorities transferred him to the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center custody Wednesday afternoon.

The Devils Lake Police Detective Sue Schwab said that officers responded to a residence in Devils Lake after a hang-up 911 call from the female victim. The identity of the victim has not been released.

She was able to leave the residence and call 911 from a cell phone, but that call was interrupted.

When she was located, the Lake Region Ambulance Service transported her to Mercy Hospital to have her wounds treated.

She had apparently been stabbed with a knife more than one time. She was treated by emergency personnel at the hospital and released.

Aggravated Assault is a Class C felony. The maximum penalty for this charge is five years and a $5,000 fine.
