Smoking ordinance available on website

Both sides of what has become a controversial issue in Devils Lake will have the chance to review and make comments on the city’s proposed smoking ordinance.

The ordinance has been posted on the city’s website www.ci.devils-lake.nd.us and the public is encouraged to read it and give their comments on it before the Devils Lake City Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Comments should be directed to one of the city commissioners; Rick Morse, Craig Stromme or Tim Heisler, Mayor Dick Johnson or City Auditor Terry Johnston.

The proposed ordinance was created by taking elements from both the Grand Forks and Fargo city smoking ordinances, but the commission wishes to make Devils Lake’s its own, not a carbon copy of another city’s.

Once the ordinance is set, following the public’s input and any changes the commission may make to it, it will be put on the November ballot for an advisory vote to gauge if the citizens of Devils Lake support the ban or not.

The commission will act on the ordinance, then, according to the wishes of those they have been elected to serve.
