The sign at the front gate at Camp Gilbert C. Grafton will welcome visitors this coming Saturday to the Open House scheduled as a dedication for the newly completed RTI facility.

The Lake Region will have a rare treat this coming weekend as Camp Gilbert C. Grafton opens its gates to welcome them to the Camp Grafton Open House set for Saturday, August 7.

The festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new 164th Regional Training Institute building - or as they call it at Camp Grafton, building 1500.

According to Command Sergeant Major Orville C. Wang who heads up the facility, “Everyone will be there for this ceremony – the North Dakota congressional delegation – all the dignitaries, complete with military band, speeches and everything.”

Following the hour-long dedication ceremony the facility will be open for touring. Guests will mingle and have an opportunity to see the newly completed school.

Starting at about 12:30 p.m. transportation will be provided to about 15 locations expanding the tours to the whole camp, including the Edwards House.

The Military Service Club will be open for business and serving a picnic lunch for guests and the Military Family Readiness Group will be selling water and refreshments throughout the day.

For visitors aged 15 through 18 there will be tac ball games. Wang explained that it’s like paint ball, only not so messy and played in a huge net.

“It’s very popular with young people,” he said.

“The balls can really sting, but there is no paint to ruin clothing or be cleaned up.”

The open house will come to an end at about 4 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend this very special day at Camp Grafton.

Visitors are reminded to bring their valid drivers license with them to show at the front gate located off Highway 57 south of Devils Lake.
