Hanson a finalists for top job at DLPS

Devils Lake High School principal, Ryan Hanson, is one of four finalists for the superintendent’s position at Devils Lake Public Schools.

In an executive session Monday, Feb. 3 the school board went through the 12 applications for the opening created when Superintendent Scott Privratsky announced his intent to retire at the end of this school year. Of the 12 applicants four were selected as finalists: they are Hanson, Jeff Simmons, Lon L. Jorgensen and Matthew Hesketh Bakke.

About the candidates: Ryan Hanson has been principal at DLHS for 16 years and 6 years as a teacher for grades seven through twelve. He also taught high school Math and Science at Divide County Public School District and Center Public School District. Hanson is presently working on his ND Superintendent’s Credentials and plans to qualify in the spring of 2020.

Jeff Simmons has been superintendent at Meade 46-1 Sturgis, S.D. school district since 2018. From 2015 to 2018 he served as superintendent for the Aberdeen Catholic School System; 2006 - 2015 as principal of the Meade 46-1 high school; 2004 - 2006 principal for Timber Lake 20-3; 1999 - 2004 principal for Eureka 44-1 high school and athletic director and from 1991 - 1999 was the seventh grade Life Science teacher at Harlington Independent School District, Harlingen, Texas.

Lon L. Jorgensen is from Thief River Falls, Minn. He is the superintendent of Warren-Alvarado-Oslo schools in Warren, Minn. His experience includes Crookston, Minn., High School as principal; Glencoe-Silver Lake, Minn., principal; LaCrosse Central High School, LaCrosse Wisc., associate principal; Sparta High School, Sparta, Wisc., assistant principal; Lakota High School, Lakota, ND, principal and activities director and Rugby High School, Rugby, ND, activities director.

Matthew Hesketh Bakke lives in Grand Forks, ND where he is pursuing a doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership, anticipating graduation in August 2021 at the University of North Dakota. He serves as superintendent at Manvel Public School in Manvel, ND. 2 From 2017 to 2018 he was the Title 1 School-wide program coordinator and Dean of Students for Valley Middle School in Grand Forks; an 8th grade Social Studies teacher, coordinator of the Grand Forks Swish at the Fast Break Club; Assistant Varsity Football Coach at GF Central High and Assistant Varsity BB coach also at GF Central.

The Devils Lake School Board hopes to make a decision within the next month, naming the new superintendent this spring.
