ShiverFest 2016 is coming!
Although we have had a pretty mild winter overall, this time of year is when you begin hearing about something called “cabin fever.”
Never fear, a cure is coming this week and it is called ShiverFest.
Starting Friday, Feb. 19 and running through Sunday Feb. 21 there is a whole list of activities planned with the express purpose of enticing residents, young and old, off the couch, out of that recliner and into the great outdoors.
Friday evening there will be open skating in the Burdick Arena starting at 8:15 p.m.
That evening, just a short drive from Devils Lake, Proz Lakeside at the Cove is presenting a “jam session” featuring Portland Junction at 8 p.m. There is no cover charge for this jam session.
Saturday dawns bright and early at 9 a.m. with the Frozen Fanny 5 K walk or run at Woodland Resort.Woodland Resort is located west of the city of Devils Lake on Highway 19 turn south on the Woodland Resort/Cove road and follow the signs.
A Youth Ice Fishing Tournament begins at 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the ice at Woodland Resort. There is a $10 admission with tickets available at the Devils Lake Fire Station, the Chamber or prior to the event on the ice at the tournament site.
Pond Hockey Tournament and Skills Competition will take place all day at Woodland Resort.
Open Curling on the ice at Woodland Resort will also take place all day long and the Lake Region Curling Club will be sponsoring a Bon Spiel all day in the Lake Region Curling Club. A shuttle is available from Woodland Resort to the LR Curling Club if you need it.
Also at Woodland Resort will be sleigh rides from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
A warming house will be provided by Camp Grafton, located next to the Pond Hockey Tournament - just in case you need it.
Kite flying will be held outside Ackerman Acres Resort. Ackerman Acres is located east of Devils Lake on U.S. Highway 2. Look for the signs, there, too.
A Winter Wonderland Vendor Show will be held in the Peterson Arena from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., that also is west of Devils Lake on Highway 19.
A gun show starts at 9 a.m. in the new City Plaza (the old Walmart) on U.S. Highway 2 west.
At 8 p.m. there will be a fireworks display at Woodland Resort followed by another Jam Session at Proz Lakeside at the Cover with “Portland Junction” playing. Again, there will be no cover charge for this jam session.
Sunday dawns with a pancake and sausage breakfast to benefit Fishing Has No Boundaries in the KC Hall starting at 8 a.m. and running until 2 p.m.
All day Sunday the Pond Hockey Tournament and Open Curling on the Ice will continue at Woodland Resort.
There will be a second day of kite flying at Ackerman Acres from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and the Gun Show will also be held a second day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the City Plaza.

Also, City Plaza is hosting an open house with samples of food and beverages available from its ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday and again all day on Saturday.
