On the first day of spring for 2018 the local Dairy Queen is joined with Dairy Queens around the country and provided a “Free Cone Day.”

Owner of the Devils Lake Dairy Queen, LeeAnn Johnston says the day has a purpose, “To celebrate life!”

“We want our fans to know how much we appreciate them,” Johnston said. It has become something of a customer appreciate day for the franchise.

All you had to do, is stop by your local Dairy Queen and you would receive a free small vanilla soft-serve cone with the signature curl on the top, limit one per customer while supplies last. When they hand you the free cone, they mention that they are accepting donations for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals - money to help save and improve the lives of kids at 170 children’s hospitals across the U.S. and Canada.

Johnston says they don’t force it, they simply ask for your “spare change” if you have some. It is not necessary to receive your free cone, however.

Last year during Free Cone Day more than $300,000 was raised for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and Canada. Donations stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and charitable care. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through the charity's Miracle Balloon icon. Its various fundraising partners and programs.
