The Devils Lake girls’ golf team began its fall campaign on Monday.

To kick off the second year of the revitalized golf program, the Firebirds competed in the first day of the East/West Classic in Jamestown. It’s a two-day event with 23 schools represented.

With six golfers competing, Devils Lake finished the day in 22nd place with a +137 overall score. The Firebirds trail 21st-place Watford City (+120) and have a sizable lead over last-place Turtle Mountain (+169). West Fargo Sheyenne is at the top of the pack with a +19.

Devils Lake’s overall score is three strokes better than it was in the first round of last year’s East/West Classic.

The best individual score for Devils Lake on Monday came from junior Tylie Brodina. She shot a 95 overall — beating her personal best of 96 by one stroke.

Senior Abby Troy posted the Firebirds’ next-best score, with a 108. It was five strokes short of her personal best.

Sophomore Charly Black finished right behind Troy with a 109 — tied for the personal best she set last season.

Fellow sophomore Camila Quinonez posted a 113. Her best last year was 100, which she set at the EDC meet to conclude the season.

Freshmen Saige Stafford and Addy Klemetsrud, in their first ever varsity meet, each posted a 132.

The second of the two-day event concludes on Tuesday with a tee time of 9 a.m.
