While state basketball was still finishing up, the Devils Lake track and field team already got its season started.

The Firebirds competed in their first indoor meet at the Mike Grandall Open on Friday in Grand Forks. The girls’ team took ninth place out of 27 teams, while the boys took 10th out of 27. The girls also set two records — a school record and a meet record.

Freshman Dottie Goss, also a member of the girls’ basketball team, set a school record in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:51.90. She came in fourth place out of 32 runners in the event.

The other record came in the 4×800 relay. Goss, Livia Nelson, Tenley Triepke and Aubrie Lebrun finished first out of four groups with a time of 10:40.92 — a meet record for the Mike Grandall Open.

Triepke also finished narrowly behind Goss in the 600, placing sixth with a time of 1:52.12.

In the boys’ 600, senior Adam Sobolik came in second place out of 37 runners. Zane Bennett finished fourth in the 3200-meter, while Sobolik also placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Riley Schmiess came in sixth out of 40 runners in the girls’ one-mile run.

The Devils Lake girls had two other relay teams place: Ella Wass, Lebrun, Triepke and Goss came in fifth out of 15 teams in the 4×400; Wass, Siri Bryce Volk, Raeleigh Myklebust and April Miller came in eighth out of 27 in the 4×200.

The boys had one top-eight finish in the relays: Z. Bennett, Aiden Ackerman, Rylan Bennett and Rylan Day placed fourth out of nine teams in the 4×800.

The Devils Lake track teams have their next indoor meet scheduled for this Friday at the Dick Clay Open in Grand Forks.
