For the first time this season, Devils Lake girls’ basketball is not ranked No. 2 in Class A.
The Firebirds fell to No. 3 on Monday, after losing 68-55 to then-No. 3 Carrington on Jan. 28. Devils Lake had previously beaten the Cardinals 62-39 on Dec. 16. That game remains Carrington’s only loss of the season. Devils Lake has lost twice, once to now-No. 2 Carrington and once to now-No. 5 Kindred.
The drop in the rankings came ahead of Monday’s critical matchup with Valley City. The Hi-Liners moved up from No. 5 to No. 4.
Also for the first time this season, the defending champion Devils Lake did not receive any first-place votes. No. 1 South Prairie-Max got 18 first-place votes, while Carrington got the remaining three. It was the first time this season that Carrington has gotten any first-place votes.
The Devils Lake boys’ team remained at No. 2 with its 13-0 start. The Firebirds got eight first-place votes, down from last week’s 10. No. 1 Kindred got two more first-place votes than last week, from 11 to 13.
The Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys, after receiving votes last week, did not get any this week.
In the girls’ Class B, Benson County stayed sturdy at No. 1 with its 17-0 record. The Wildcats got 13 first-place votes. No. 2 Kenmare/Bowbells received the remaining seven. That was a minuscule change from 14 and seven first-place votes, respectively, last week. K/M is 15-2.
The New Rockford-Sheyenne boys’ team fell all the way from No. 4 to No. 9 in the boys’ Class B poll. The Rockets had been steadily climbing before they were upset by unranked May-Port-C-G on Feb. 1, 70-60.
