North Star senior Jorie Ahlberg has committed to play volleyball for Lake Region State College. The North Star Schools Facebook page announced the news on Wednesday.

Ahlberg, who also plays on the girls’ basketball team, was a setter for the Bearcats. The volleyball team dealt with numerous injuries and setbacks this past fall, but Ahlberg was a steady presence in keeping points alive and passing the ball to her teammates.

Her mom, Kirstin Ahlberg, is North Star’s head volleyball coach. Her younger sister, seventh-grader Genevieve Ahlberg, got some experience at hitter towards the end of the season.

J. Ahlberg’s accomplishments go beyond the court; in a previous story for the Devils Lake Journal, she talked about her passion for music and volunteering in her community. She was named one of 25 Athleaders in the country, an award designated for excelling in academics, leadership, responsibility and acts of selflessness.

At the time when Ahlberg gave the interview in October, she was undecided on what she would do after high school. One of the possibilities she mentioned, though, was playing volleyball. She’s already worked with LRSC head volleyball coach Steve Waddell through a youth program that he runs.

“I just love playing with people who love volleyball,” Ahlberg said at the time. “And I’ve made friends through that too. I know people on [Benson County] that we played together for a really long time. And I love Steve too. He’s a really good coach, and they have a really good program there, so it’s made me a better player, for sure.”

Ahlberg will be joining Devils Lake senior Torri Fee on the Royals next fall. Both are defense-minded players, with Fee specializing at the libero position. LRSC went 15-21 this season and made it as far as the Region XIII semifinals.
