Devils Lake is hosting a volleyball tournament for a collection of Class B teams on Saturday.

With 12 total teams competing across three pools, the action will be held at both Devils Lake High School and Sweetwater Elementary School.

The Lake Region is represented by three teams: North Star, New Rockford-Sheyenne and the Devils Lake JV team.

North Star, ranked No. 8 in Class B, is 9-3 so far this year and 1-0 in region play. NR-S has only had a few games, with a 1-5 record, and is set to play its first region contest on Thursday. The Devils Lake JV roster has a little bit of overlap with the varsity team, with players such as Emma Hofstad, Kinley Johnson and Mia Elsperger.

North Star is in Pool A, while NR-S and Devils Lake JV are in Pool B. Pool play will begin at 8:30 in the morning, with each team playing three matches over the span of six time slots. Each match will be two sets, with a 27-point cap on each set. Pools A and B will play in the Devils Lake Sports Center West and East, respectively, while Pool C will play at Sweetwater.

A team will earn three “points” if it wins both sets in a given match. In the case of a split, it’ll earn two points if it scores more total points, and one point if it scores fewer total points. If the two opponents score an equal number of points in a split, each team will earn 1.5 points.

From there, the 12 teams will be seeded for bracket play, which is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (Tiebreakers to decide seeds will be based on head-to-head matchups first, then fewest points given up in the tournament, then most points scored in the tournament, then a flip of the coin, if need be.)

The No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 teams get a bye in bracket play. The bracket goes through four rounds before finally declaring a winner in a championship match that’s tentatively scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

“I would like to welcome you to Devils Lake and wish all the teams the best of luck throughout the tournament,” Devils Lake Public Schools activities director Jason Wiberg wrote in the event program. “I hope you enjoy your visit to our community and school.”
